Berwick Narrowly Defeats Gar In Boys Soccer

BERWICK – Pancho DeLeon scored the game-winning goal with less than 10
minutes remaining as host Berwick Area edged GAR, 4-3, in a Wyoming Valley
Conference Division II soccer game Wednesday afternoon.
Steve Morio, Rob Hadvance and R.J. Suda each scored a goal for GAR, which
led 3-1 at halftime. Ed Vaquiz scored the second of his two goals in the
second half and DeLeon added two goals to lead the Bulldogs comeback.
Berwick goalkeeper Tom Pruitt recorded 23 saves, while GAR’s T.J. Nilon
stopped 18 shots.
Meyers 3, Hanover Area 1
HANOVER TWP. – Scott Nordheim scored two goals as Meyers (4-0) edged the
Hawkeyes (1-3). Nordheim and Joe Baranoski each scored a goal in the first
half as Meyers took a 2-0 halftime lead.
Hanover Area’s Matt Garrison made it 2-1 with an unassisted goal 28 seconds
into the second half before Nordheim sealed the win on a goal with less than
five minutes remaining in the game. Kevin Puzak recorded 17 saves for the
Hawkeyes.
Berwick Area 162, Bishop Hafey 199
BERWICK – Derek Bailey was the medalist with a 3-over par 39, as Berwick
Area stayed undefeated at 7-0 with a pair of critical matches coming up.
The Bulldogs host WVC Southern Division foes Crestwood today and Hanover
Area on Friday. Berwick Area beat both teams earlier this season.
Also scoring for Berwick Area was Ben Martz (40), J.J. Scott (41) and Jeff
May (42). T.J. Breslin (47), Adam Wusfus (48), Frank D’Angelo (52) and Tim
Sisock (52) scored for Bishop Hafey.
Pittston Area 152, Seton Catholic 193
EXETER – Mike Sokolowsky from Pittston Area was medalist with a 3-over par
Joe Lopatka (39) rounded out the scoring for Pittston.
For Seton Catholic, Jim Gorman led with a 44, Alex Nitkowski and Bob
Lampman shot 49s and Andrew Durako carded a 51.
Greater Nanticoke Area 159, MMI Prep 189
CONYNGHAM – Greater Nanticoke Area’s Nick Peck was medalist by shooting 36
at Valley Country Club (par 35).
Also for Nanticoke, Dan Benick shot a 38, Jan Hazus had a 42, and Justin
Augustini fired a 43.
For MMI, Anthony Orlando led with a 40. T.J. Radzwich (42), Aaron Zapko
(52) and Brian Thomas (55) rounded out the scoring for MMI.
Crestwood 167, Hanover Area 172
HANOVER TWP. – Hanover Area’s Mike Lunski shot a 2-over-par 37 at Wyoming
Valley Country Club en route to medalist honors, but Bryan Kerstetter’s 39
helped Crestwood to the win.
Marty Biskup and Joe Swanson both shot 42s and Shawn White scored 44 for
the Comets.
Rounding out the scorecard for the Hawkeyes was Eric Plisko (38), Ryan
Wesley (48) and Brian Hastings (49).
Coughlin 165, GAR 193
WILKES-BARRE – GAR’s Frank Schiel earned medalist honors with a 1-over par
Jason Stankiewicz was the Crusaders’ low man with a 38, Josh Mattei
followed with a 41, Kevin McNulty carded a 42 and John Wolski and Stanley
Wychock both shot 44 for Coughlin’s fourth score. Also scoring for GAR were
Francis Dehaut (51), Scott Pavone (51) and Casey Thomas (54).
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Bishop O’Reilly 3, Hazleton Area 2
HAZLETON – Melissa Gunshannon had 16 kills, 10 service points, 11 digs,
four aces and one block to lead the Queenswomen back from a 2-0 deficit to
defeat Hazleton Area 3-2.
O’Reilly won by scores of 18-25, 18-25, 25-14, 25-13, 15-10.
Ashley Rome added 21 kills, 18 digs and 11 points for the Queenswomen while
Mallory Medura had 23 assists, nine points and six aces, and Lauren Mizenko
chipped in 14 digs.
Crestwood 3, MMI 0
FREELAND – Nicole Boone led Crestwood with 12 service points and 26 assists
while Elise Williams added 12 points and nine aces.
Also for Crestwood, Layne Kehl had five kills, 14 points and eight aces.
North Pocono 3, Abington Heights 1
CLARKS SUMMIT – Kacie Fick led North Pocono with 13 service points and
Eileen Sodano added 22 assists.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Misericordia 0, Gwynedd-Mercy 0 (2OT)
DALLAS – Kathleen Schwarz made three saves to lead the Cougars as
Misericordia improved to 2-2-1.
Elmira 2, Wilkes 0
EDWARDSVILLE – Katie Green had six saves in goal for Wilkes, which outshot
Elmira 17-9.
The Lady Colonels fell to 3-3.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
King’s 5, Lycoming 4
WILLIAMSPORT – Wyoming Valley West graduate Megan Michael and Seton
Catholic’s Rita Kaluzavitch were singles winners and paired up to win a
doubles match for King’s.
Beth Ann Hill was also a singles winner for the Lady Monarchs and Kristen
Hunter and Malena Kinsman teamed up to win a doubles match.
Scranton 9, Wilkes 0
SCRANTON – The Lady Royals improved to 3-2 overall while Wilkes fell to
Kristin Bellino, Maggie Leuzarder and Danielle Red were double-winners for
Scranton.
MEN’S SOCCER
Scranton 1, Misericordia 0
SCRANTON – Michael DeAscentis scored a second-half goal to lead Scranton to
a win.
Kevin Franco had six saves in goal for Misericordia.
Wilkes 3, Baptist Bible 1
CLARKS GREEN – Wilkes got goals from Mike Bridy, Matt Foreman and Coughlin
graduate Steve Uhas.
Foreman, Bridy, Paul Gideon and Justin Leach had assists for the Colonels
and Wyoming Valley West product Dominik Proctor had six saves in net.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Misericordia 3, Gwynedd-Mercy 1
DALLAS TWP. – Kelly Coppage posted 28 digs and two blocks and Chavonne
Potts added 23 digs and 18 assists for Misericordia in a Pennsylvania Athletic
Conference victory.
