Like any scene – music, food, etc.- there's been some attrition in H-town's craft beer world, some excellent breweries gone too soon. But hope springs eternal with new entries all the time. One of the reasons beer brewers take a chance here stands tall and proud on Lyons Avenue, viewable from some of the city's skyscrapers. It's Saint Arnold, the grandaddy of Texas craft beers, and 30 years in they're still doing it better than practically everyone in town. What they're doing better is a long list, too much for a blurb or two, but in a nutshell there's the spacious, inviting and lively beer garden and restaurant. There's fantastic food. There's a slate of cool programming, everything from an annual beard-growing contest to a home chef, one-pot cook-off to benefit local food organizations. The folks at Saint Arnold participate every year in MS 150 and Art Car Parade events. But, even with all that, the thing they do best is the thing they did first: beer. Their recent entries include Irish Hello, a tasty dry stout. Juicy IPA is a refreshing and robust favorite, a beer we expect will have a long, fruitful life like the brewery's classics, Lawnmower, Art Car IPA, Pumpkinator and Christmas Ale. There can never be enough beer, if you ask us, and local brewers planning to add their styles to Houston's mix can look to Saint Arnold as a beacon of hope. 2000 Lyons 713-686-9494 saintarnold.com
