  • Penn State vs. Illinois Penn State and Illinois have a massive Big Ten showdown in Week 5, and it is easily the hardest test for each team this season.

Penn State is 3-0 this season with wins over West Virginia, Bowling Green, and Kent State. The Bowling Green game was a close call, but Penn State had an easy opponent to rebound against in Week 4 coming out of the Week 3 bye, taking on Kent State.

As for Illinois, they're a bit more battle tested. They've beaten Kansas and Nebraska this season. The win against Nebraska came on the road and in overtime.

Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer has been fantastic. He's completing 71.4% of his passes for 862 yards, 10 touchdowns, and no interceptions.

On the ground, they've rushed for 671 yards as a unit and are averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

As for Penn State, quarterback Drew Allar has been pushing the ball downfield. He's averaging 12.6 yards per attempt and completing 70.7% of his passes for 729 yards, eight touchdowns, and one interception.

In the backfield, Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen have over 500 yards rushing and two touchdowns. As a unit, the Nittany Lions are averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

Illinois is allowing just 188 passing yards (50th) and 104.2 rushing yards (35th) per game. This will be Penn State's hardest task to date. They're 18.5-point home favorites, and I think that's a bit too much here.

Penn State will win the game thanks to this new-look offense, but Illinois will keep it within 18. Altmyer has been playing extremely well, and the Nittany Lions allowed Bowling Green quarterback Connor Bazelak to throw for 254 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
