Big first half carries SDSU women past D-II Washburn
BROOKINGS — A 58-point first half that included 38 points in the second quarter sent the South Dakota State women’s basketball team sailing to a 95-58 win over Washburn (Kan.) on Tuesday night at Frost Arena.
The contest counted toward SDSU’s regular season record, improving the Jackrabbits to 4-2 overall, but was an exhibition contest for Washburn, an NCAA Division II institution.
Brooklyn Meyer led all players with 18 points, adding seven rebounds and one block in 18 minutes. Paige Meyer scored 14 points and dished out four assists in 15 minutes during what was her second game back in the lineup as she works back from an injury. Tori Nelson finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Madison Mathiowetz and Mesa Byom chipped in 11 points each. Byom also had seven rebounds, and Madysen Vlastuin notched 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
As a team, the Jacks shot 36 of 63 (57.1%) and scored 54 points in the paint. SDSU doubled up Washburn in the rebounding battle 52 to 26.
Washburn was paced by Aubree Dewey and Yiibari Mwidadah, who each scored 10 points. Dewey added six rebounds to lead the Ichabods, who were 23-for-69 (33.3%) shooting in the contest, including 3 of 22 (13.6%) from 3-point range.
SDSU is back in action next Tuesday, Dec. 5, in a home non-conference contest against Washington State.
