Mr O'Shea, originally from Listowel but a long-time Killorglin resident, was selected for Fine Gael's Kerry ticket at tonight's convention in the Heights Hotel, Killarney. Cllrs Mike Foley, Mike Kennelly, and Tommy Griffin had also been nominated but withdrew their names ahead of the convention, leaving the path clear for Mr O'Shea, who won an All-Ireland senior football medal with Kerry in 1997.

Mr O'Shea was proposed by former Fine Gael TD and Minister Jimmy Deenihan and seconded by Stephen Clifford.

While Mr O'Shea is currently the only Fine Gael candidate confirmed to contest the General Election, meeting chairperson Garret Ahearn reminded those in attendance that Fine Gael's National Executive Council retains the right to add a candidate to the ticket if it so wishes.
