Black Friday is a GovGuam holiday, but it's a school day for GDOE students

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and is one of the busiest shopping days, is once again a holiday for the government of Guam, with the exception of the Guam Department of Education, which will use it as a regular instructional day or a make-up day due to the impact of Tropical Storm Many-yi last week.

Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero will be issuing an executive order declaring Nov. 29 as a GovGuam holiday, director of communications Krystal Paco-San Agustin said Monday.

With that executive order, it's going to be a four-day GovGuam weekend starting on Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, to Sunday, Dec. 1.

Black Friday has been a time for shoppers to hunt for the best deals, and some retailers even have multiple days of Black Friday shopping deals.

GDOE: Make-up day

GDOE on Monday announced that there will be classes on Nov. 29.

"This update ensures that students will receive the necessary instructional days to meet educational requirements, reflecting GDOE's commitment to maintaining a consistent and quality education despite unforeseen disruptions," GDOE said in a statement on Monday announcing an update on its instructional day and make-up day.

GDOE encourages parents and guardians to take note of this date and make the necessary arrangements for their children's school attendance.

"The scheduled Instructional Day is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the academic calendar and ensuring that all students can meet their educational goals," GDOE added.

Multiple schools' opening for this school year was delayed because of pending Department of Public Health and Social Services inspection. Tropical Storm Man-yi, meanwhile, forced GDOE schools to shut down on Nov. 13.
