Boca Raton police get multiple reports of common phone scam Saturday

A common phone scam is working its way through Boca Raton this weekend.

The city's police department warned that its officers received several reports on Saturday alone of people getting calls from scammers posing as law enforcement.

The Boca Raton Police Department (BRPD) explained that one version of the scam involves the caller telling a potential victim that there is a warrant out for the latter's arrest. Sometimes, the call will spoof a real phone number to look more legitimate.

The scammer then demands the person pay either in money or gift cards to avoid being arrested.

"The scammer may sound convincing and use real information about you and the real names of law enforcement officers to make the scam appear more credible," the BRPD post continued. "Don't fall for it! It's a scam!"

The police department pointed out that is not how law enforcement operates. They do not ask for payments over the phone, through credit cards or gift cards or any other way.
