Boomer’s Paradise: Texas has 5 of the Top 10 best U.S. Cities for Retirees

According to a new report from USA Today , Florida isn't the only state that retired folks are moving to as they enjoy their golden years. It turns out that Texas is a key player when it comes to enjoying retirement as well.

According to the study , they took into account a variety of factors that led to their decision including tax friendliness, housing cost, health care availability, and leisure activity options.

The positions 10 through 6 were VERY Texas-heavy:

Abilene, TX

Wichita Falls, TX

Boise, ID

Sugar Land, TX

#5 Rochester, MN

With a crime rate of roughly 30 per 1,000 residents and an average home value of $324,131, Rochester took the number five spot. The 5-star-rated Mayo Clinic Hospital is located here as well, with the highest number of senior care providers per capita of all cities evaluated for the study: 15.2.

#4 Knoxville, TN

Because Tennessee does not have an income tax, the state allows retirees to keep more of their accumulated wealth than other states.

The city of Knoxville also offers gorgeous views of the Great Smoky Mountains adorned with hiking trails, golf courses and restaurants. The average home value in Knoxville rests at just over $357, 411, and the crime rate sits at 48 per every 1,000 residents.

#3 Meridian, ID

Plenty of shopping plazas, entertainment options and scenic views put Meridian high on the list for all U.S. retirees. The city also has the fifth-lowest crime rate of the 329 cities analyzed in the study at only 7.9 out of every 1,000 citizens.

Average home value is steeper than others, however. You can expect to pay, on average, $528,000 for a home in Meridian, Idaho.

#2 Peoria, IL

Nestled along the Illinois River, Peoria sports a crime rate of 43.1 out of every 1,000 residents and a comfortable average home value at $127,040.

All of this, along with Illinois not taxing social security payouts puts this city at the number two spot on the list.
