BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Fogley, Mirza, Ronchi, O’Malley, Michel earn medals

MESHOPPEN — Abington Heights junior Timothy Fogley finished fifth in a 68-runner field to lead the way as the Comets placed third out of 10 teams in Class 3A boys during the District 2 Cross Country Championships Oct. 23.

Fogley completed the 3.1-mile Wyoming County Fairgrounds course in 17:06.6 to earn both a medal and a berth in the state meet.

The top five individuals other than runners from the championship team advanced to the state level along with the team champs.

Aiden Janowicz won in 16:29.3 to lead Wallenpaupack to the title in a tight team race among the top three spots.

The Buckhorns defeated Hazleton Area 47-50. Abington Heights posted a score of 58, which was 58 ahead of the next-best team.

The top 10 runners earned medals.

Hamza Mirza gave the Comets a second medalist with his 10th-place finish. George Sutton, Jack Shoemaker and Aashirth Goli came in 11th, 14th and 18th.

All six District 2 races were conducted on the same day on the same course.

District 2 Class 2A

Vincent O'Malley was fourth to lead Scranton Prep to fourth as a team. He finished in 17:23.1.

Nicholas Michel was ninth to give the Cavaliers a second medalist and state qualifier in the race where the top 20 earned medals.

Mid Valley won the team title with 50 points.

Crestwood, led by individual champion Mason Staude, beat out Lake-Lehman 68-71 for the second state berth.

District 2 Class A

Lackawanna Trail's Avery Ronchi placed seventh out of 90 runners in Class 2A to receive a medal and a state berth.

Elk Lake had the top three finishers, led by three-time champion Kendel Jones, and won the team title with 57 points.

Lakeland took the second state berth 74-82 over Riverside.

Lackawanna Trail was 11th out of 13 teams with 227 points.

PIAA Championships

Lackawanna Trail's Ronchi ran the Hershey Parkview Course in 17:38 to place 33rd in Class A at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships Nov. 2.

The top 25 in each race received medals.

There were 260 finishers in Class A.

Scranton Prep's O'Malley and Michel were 69th and 143rd out of 249 in 17:40 and 18:24.

Fogley from Abington Heights was 209th of 250 in Class 3A in 18:19.

Lackawanna League

Abington Heights finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the 24-team league with a 19-4 record.

Scranton Prep went 17-6. Lackawanna Trail was 5-18.
