Boy’s customized wheelchair stolen from Warren porch
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Warren woman is asking for help. Her son's wheelchair was swiped from their front yard, leaving the 6-year-old virtually immobile.
Kristin Starkey still has the receipt for when she purchased a specialized wheelchair for her son, Jaymeson, who has cerebral palsy.
"Jaymeson has been in a wheelchair of some sort since he was about a year old," she said.
The chair itself is gone, swiped right from their front porch earlier this week, leaving the family shocked and Jaymeson essentially immobile.
"You didn't just take someone's Big Wheel. You took somebody's only mobility — that's his legs. That's how he gets around," Starkey said.
She says Jaymeson was playing with his siblings in the front yard on Monday. When they came in for dinner, they left the chair near the front porch. A few minutes later, it was missing.
"I don't have plan B. You don't ever think someone is going to steal your 6-year-old's wheelchair," Starkey said.
She isn't sure what to do next. She's filed a police report and authorities are looking into the matter, but replacing an $11,000 chair isn't so easy for a single mother.
"It took months to get. It's not like something you can Amazon Prime and have it here in a couple days. This took four to six months to get after insurance approved it," Starkey said.
Without the chair, Jaymeson can't get to and from school, and is limited in other daily activities.
"He loves school and cried yesterday because we couldn't put him on the bus," Starkey said.
She even put out a plea on social media — a post that's gotten more than 700 likes and reactions. Her request is simple.
"I don't care why they took it. I don't care who took it. I just need it back, no questions asked," she said.
