LOS ANGELES - Bronny James, the older son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, has been cleared to return to basketball activities after suffering cardiac arrest during a workout in July.

James, a 19-year-old freshman for the University of Southern California basketball team, will return to practice next week and games “soon after,” according to a spokesperson for the James family.

“Bronny James is now cleared by his doctors for a full return to basketball,” the James family spokesperson said in a statement . “Bronny will have a final evaluation with USC staff this week, resume practice next week and return to games soon after.

“The James family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible medical team, the entire USC community, and especially the countless friends, family, and fans for their love and support. Fight On!,” the statement added.”

Earlier this month, LeBron provided an update on Bronny’s condition, saying he was “on the up and up” and was hopeful to be back to basketball soon. Bronny has been sidelined from basketball activities for months since suffering cardiac arrest during a USC team workout in July.

In August, weeks after Bronny was released from the hospital, the James family said his cardiac arrest was caused by a congenital heart defect. He missed the Trojans’ first team practice of the season in September, but USC head coach Andy Enfield said he was “doing very well” at the time.

The Trojans are currently 5-2 this season and will face No. 11-ranked Gonzaga on Saturday in Las Vegas. Following that, the Trojans play at home against Long Beach State on Dec. 10, at Auburn on Dec. 17, and at Alabama State on Dec. 19.
