Brothers carry on family tradition, open Za Bros Pizzera in Woodhaven
Ken and Vince Dailey are known for their love for pizza, so when they stuck with a family tradition and opened a pizza restaurant, it was only fitting for the two to become known as — the Za Bros.
That is their shortened name for "pizza brothers."
Za Bros Pizzeria recently opened its doors to the public at 22118 West Road in Woodhaven.
Ken Dailey said this is their first business venture as brothers.
He said they've had relatives in business, including a grandfather who came here from Italy and opened a pizza restaurant in Flat Rock in the 1970s.
It didn't take long for the Za Bros to start thinking about getting deep into the dishes they wanted to make, starting with the sourdough crusts, along with butter, cheese, garlic, and Cajun crust pizzas.
The restaurant's signature barnyard pizzas have become a fast favorite in just a couple of months.
They are described as being similar to a meat lover's pizza, with pepperoni, sausage and bacon toppings.
"It's a hearty pizza, Dailey said.
Customers have shown their appreciation for the sourdough crust option, viewing it as a healthier choice.
Dailey is amazed how everything with the business came together.
"Honestly, this was a quick transition," Dailey said. "This place used to be Andy's Pizza & Subs. They announced they were closing on Aug. 12. Vince and I got it, made some changes and we opened on Aug. 30. There were a lot of friends, family, and members of the community here for the opening."
The brothers, who actually are from Taylor, did consider checking out locations in Dearborn.
"But, this crept up on us out of nowhere," Dailey said. "It was just a great opportunity."
The brothers are friends with the owner of Andy's and he even came to the grand opening in support of their business and to wish them well.
They couldn't have been happier with the response from the opening and commended the residents for always wanting to support small businesses.
Like most first-time business owners, success has come with a bit of sacrifice.
The brothers are certainly no stranger to the hard work needed to get the restaurant up and running.
"My brother and I put in a lot of long hours before we open, and we are here after closing," Dailey said. "We typically work 12 to 14 hours a day. We've got a cousin here working with us, too, and it's good to have family."
Along with various create-your-own pizza opportunities, the restaurant also serves cheese bread, subs, salad, and wings (plain, barbecue and buffalo).
The most popular subs so far have been steak and cheese, and Italian.
Word began to spread about the restaurant opening through signage and word of mouth, but also in large part from the establishment's social media page, which is listed under the restaurant name.
The brothers keep the site updated with all of the latest business news.
