A man is behind bars after, deputies say, he rammed his truck into the mother of his child — killing her — during an argument in Broward County.

Edwin Amaya, 32, was booked into the Broward Main Jail on a first-degree murder charge. Around 9:33 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to reports of a hit-and-run near 130 SW 8th St. in Pompano Beach. The area houses several apartment complexes.

There, they found Brenda Hernandez Amaya, 29, and Omar Munguia-Henrique, 32, who had been struck and dragged by a vehicle, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Paramedics with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue took them to Broward Health North.

Hernandez Amaya died, deputies say. Munguia-Henrique survived and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The incident, according to investigators, transpired while Amaya and Hernandez Amaya were arguing over their shared child. At some point during the squabble, Amaya entered his Ford F-250 truck, backed up and rammed the front of his truck into Hernandez Amaya.

The woman then drove into parked cars while Munguia-Henrique tried to hang onto the vehicle, according to BSO. Munguia-Henrique ultimately fell onto the ground.

Amaya ran off but was arrested near the 700 block of South Dixie Highway, deputies say.

Anyone with information should contact BSO Homicide Det. Steve Novak at 954-321-4325 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
