Bryce Young wins again, but will he start the Panthers’ next game?

Bryce Young had to go all the way to Munich, Germany, but the former Alabama All-American quarterback walked off the field after victories on consecutive Sundays for the first time in his NFL career.

After last week's 23-22 victory over the New Orleans Saints , Young and the Carolina Panthers defeated the New York Giants 20-17 in overtime on Sunday.

"I'm so proud of Bryce," Carolina coach Dave Canales said . "I'm so proud of taking the next step again. I thought he had a great day. I thought it could have been a fantastic day. I thought a few balls got away from us a couple of times that would have really turned it into really an exceptional day. But he handled the rush well. He handled the different coverage looks and all that."

Does that mean Young will be the Panthers' starting quarterback again when Carolina plays the Kansas City Chiefs at noon CST Nov. 24 at Bank of America Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, in its next game?

Too early to tell, Canales said.

"We'll take all the information," Canales said . "We'll do all that. But Bryce is certainly making a statement to all of us. I just can't tell you how proud I am of weekly progress, and that's the goal for all of us."

The No. 1 pick in 2023 NFL Draft, Young started 16 games for the Panthers as a rookie. Carolina won two. After the Panthers started the 2024 season with two losses with Young under center, Canales benched the QB in favor of veteran Andy Dalton.

Carolina had won one of Dalton's five starts when the Red Rifle sustained a thumb injury in a traffic accident on Oct. 22. That put Young back in the lineup for a 28-14 loss to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 27.

Since then, Canales has made a weekly decision about the starting quarterback. Selecting Young twice, Canales was rewarded with two victories.

"We've had a lot of adversity," Young said . "And for me, just the ability to know on offense I have 10 other guys that I know are going to do their job, I know are going to compete, that I'm grateful to go to war with. And the defense being the same, having all the faith in the world in them. I'm not saying that's different, but it's just great us growing in that together."

  • Young and the Panthers made a fast start on Sunday. With a field goal on the first play of the second quarter, Carolina had a 10-0 lead. At that point, Young had completed 9-of-11 passes for 78 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Young's 5-yard toss to Ja'Tavion Sanders for the tight end's first touchdown reception had allowed the Panthers to take a 7-0 lead with 7:48 remaining.

"That was awesome," Young said . "I'm super happy for him, someone who's been playing so well, worked super hard. Great, great guy. It's great having him in the locker room. So I'm glad for him to get his first, and there'll be plenty more."

In the final three quarters of the game and overtime, Young completed 6-of-14 passes for 48 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

On a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive that allowed Carolina to take a 17-7 lead with 3:33 left in the third quarter, Young lost a touchdown pass to an illegal-formation penalty. Otherwise, he was 2-of-2 for 16 yards and scrambled for a 24-yard gain in the series.

"You think of a run as the line didn't do a good job," Young said . "But, really, it's the opposite. The line was able to make a lane for me to run, so they get credit for that, for sure. And it was just, at that point, you just try to pick up as many yards as you can."

New York tied the game with 10 fourth-quarter points, including a 42-yard field goal with five seconds left in the fourth quarter by former Carolina kicker Graham Gano.

The Panthers made the game-winning play on the first snap of overtime, when defensive end A'Shawn Robinson caused running back Tyrone Tracy to fumble. Carolina recovered the football knocked loose by the former Alabama All-American at the New York 26-yard line.

A 36-yard field goal from Eddy Pineiro ended the game after three Chuba Hubbard runs into the line.

"We wanted to, obviously, finish it offensively maybe a different way," Young said . "But the defense did a great job of picking us up at the end, handing us the game like they did. They played great and balled all game. But those are the moments you live for, just having those opportunities again. When we watch the film, we'll definitely see stuff they want to do better. But those are the moments that you live for, that you work for, so it was just good being in a back-and-forth game like that and for us to be able to prevail."

Hubbard ran for 153 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries.

"When you have a back like that, an O-line that you can lean on in the running game on that, that's huge," Young said . "It helped us out a lot, opened up a lot of things."

The Panthers were the home team for the NFL's Germany game at Allianz Stadium.

"I feel like we got some good, like, home, home atmosphere," Young said . "Everyone's quiet on third down, and they got a little loud for them on third down, so I appreciated that.

"But it was just really surreal. Honestly, just being a kid from from Pasadena, California, and being out in Munich, Germany, playing a football game is just something I never could have dreamed of as a kid. The fans, the support, everything here was amazing - being able to see the city, be out here and just the engagement from the fans throughout the whole time. It was just cool seeing a different culture and atmosphere, so it was definitely a blessing."
