The Caltech women's basketball team's 2024-25 regular season officially began Tuesday night in Braun Gymnasium. The Beavers wasted no time storming ahead and maintaining a comfortable lead throughout a 71-46 rout of Bethesda University (Anaheim, Calif.).

Senior Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) led her team in scoring, tallying Caltech's first eight points of the contest en route to team highs of 24 points and three assists, further grabbing six steals and six rebounds while commiting just one turnover.

"I think it was really solid," Edwards said of the victory. "I think there's still a lot to improve on as a team, but for our our first official game there were lots of good things to build on. I'm really proud of how our first-years played too."

Indeed, Caltech's incoming class made an impact in the contest, as Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills) followed Edwards in the points column with 17, and Zeynep Goktepe (Istanbul, Turkey / The MacDuffie School) scored nine points along with two assists. Anamaria Robertson (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) and Louise Scriven (Paraparaumu Beach, New Zealand / Paraparaumu College) both contributed points and Carolyn Ruan (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) grabbed a pair of rebounds.

The Beavers set the tone by out-scoring the guests 20-6 in the first quarter and eventually peaking with a 27-point lead in the final minute. While both teams each racked up 11 second-chance points (scoring after offensive rebounds), Caltech dominated every other category, out-performing the opposition in points off turnovers (42 to Bethesda's 20), points in the paint (38-20), fast break points (6-0), and with 10 more points from bench players. Accuracy-wise, the Beavers shot 40.9 percent from the field compared to 27.1 by the Flames, who were held to just one successful three-pointer out of 14 attempts.
