Capn' Mike's food truck The Galley serves Thanksgiving meals

Thursday’s Thanksgiving celebrations kicked off the holiday season, a time when during the coldest months of the year, people reflect on what their grateful for and celebrate charity, kindness, family and community.

At Library Park Thursday morning, it was through the power of community that well over a hundred people got to enjoy a free hot Thanksgiving meal, served up by the Galley, Captain Mike’s Beer and Burger Bar food truck.

The fourth annual Thanksgiving meal came out of the pandemic said Captain Mike’s owners Mick and Jeanette Kelly. It began in 2020 as a thank you.

“It was us giving back after the community treated us so well during the pandemic,” Mick Kelly said.

The event was “eye-opening,” Mick Kelly said, with them serving over a hundred meals and running out of food. Since then, the couple said they serve as many as 200 meals every year for anybody in the community, from those “down on their luck” or who simply can’t cook their meal this season.

“There’s just seems to be a need,” Jeanette Kelly said. “We definitely want to serve the community and give back, we’re just grateful to be able to.”

This year’s event almost was a crisis, if not for the help of another local business, the Kellys said. Their food truck had broken down, but Firehouse Towing dutifully brought it to the Simmons Library parking lot so they could give out the meals.

“They took time out of their Thanksgiving today to help us,” Mick Kelly said.

It was an event also powered by their many volunteers, Jeanette Kelly said.

“We’re grateful for the community, it just keeps growing,” Jeanette Kelly said.
