Carol Peletier recruited a stranger for her quest to find Daryl Dixon in France on Sunday's season two premiere of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon on AMC.

The popular character from The Walking Dead, portrayed by Melissa McBride, originally was supposed to be part of the spin-off series with Daryl [ Norman Reedus ], but the actress was unable to participate due to logistical issues.

After reprising her role in the first season finale, Melissa was back as a series regular for the second season that is subtitled The Book Of Carol.

The season two premiere on AMC opened with Daryl training young Laurent [Louis Puech Scigliuzzi] to fight walkers.

'You never back up,' Daryl advised the boy who is viewed by a religious group as the future Messiah after being born to a zombie mother.

Laurent grew frustrated and stated that he would never be as capable as Daryl.

'It's only been two weeks,' Daryl reassured him.

The episode titled 'La Gentillesse des Étrangers' [The Kindness of Strangers] then showed Carol riding a motorcycle while on a mission for any leads on Daryl's whereabouts.

She brutally gained information from a group of men who came across Daryl and revealed that he was taken away on a boat to France.

Carol spotted a small propeller plane flying in the area and tracked it down to a secluded party owned by Ash [Manish Dayal].

She lied to Ash claiming she needed help fixing her car and incurred his wrath after she accidentally discovered a child's grave marked 'A.P.'

'His name was Avi. Avi Patel A.P.," Ash revealed in a voice thick with grief. "My boy... He was 7 when he died. April 19th, 8:23 am.'

'That's when you come here,' Carol said.

'I sit with him every morning. I sit. And I apologize,' Ash said.

'For what?,' Carol asked.

'For letting him wander off. For not being able to save him. For not protecting him like a parent is supposed to protect their child. So, when he died... I made a place for him here,' Ash said.

'To keep him safe,' Carol said.

'His mom left when he was a baby, so... It was all up to me,' Ash said.

Ash revealed that Avi loved planes and about a month after his son's death he found a crashed Beechcraft plane that he restored and learned to fly.

He invited Carol to dinner and she made up a story about her daughter Sophia being in France with her husband Ed when the zombie apocalypse broke out.

'You don't need your car fixed. You want me to fly you to France to find your daughter,' Ash said.

Carol nodded affirmatively.

'So you lied to me?,' Ash said.

'If you knew Avi was out there, wouldn't you do anything, whatever it took, to find him?,' Carol asked.

'But he's not,' Ash said.

Back in France, Daryl clashed with the pacifist approach of his new community under the leadership of Losang [Joel de la Fuente] and argued for a quick response after they learned comrades had been captured by the paramilitary group Pouvoir des Vivants [Power of the Living].

Daryl joined the rescue squad, but their plans went awry when an explosive failed to detonate and he was forced to put his combat skills to use.

He helped rescue people who had been kidnapped, but a woman Daryl was about to shoot escaped when their bomb finally detonated and distracted him.

Ash, meanwhile, decided to help Carol in her mission to find her daughter Sophia, who actually died during season two of The Walking Dead after she went missing and was found in a barn as a walker.

He came up with a plan to stick to the coast and fly to Greenland where they could refuel before heading to Europe.

Their plans to fly to France were hastened by a sudden lighting storm that ignited their fuel supply and breached the perimeter holding back zombies.

Ash and Carol jumped into the plane and used its propellers to kill zombies blocking their path.

Carol was in a plane for the first time and was paralyzed with fear as they ascended.

'Just center yourself. Take a deep breath in. And out. There's nothing to be afraid of up here,' Ash told her.

The episode ended with Carol enjoying a breathtaking shot of sunrise over the clouds at Ash's urging.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon : The Book of Carol will return next week on AMC.
