R.Green3 months ago
The Carolina Panthers have fired head coach Frank Reich, the team announced Monday.

The dismissal occurred less than 24 hours after the Panthers’ 17-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, their fourth consecutive loss that dropped their record to a league-worst 1-10. Disgusted owner David Tepper reportedly yelled an expletive after leaving the locker room following the loss.

“I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he will not continue as head coach of the Carolina Panthers ,” Tepper said in a statement released Monday mornng. “I want to thank Frank for his dedication and service, and we wish him well.”

Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor was named as interim head coach. Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will take over play-calling duties with help from senior assistant Jim Caldwell.

Reich, in his first year as the head coach of the Panthers, was sacked after just 11 games, the shortest tenure for an NFL head coach in the last 45 years , according to Sports Illustrated. He also the first NFL head coach since the 1970 merger to be fired in back-to-back seasons , according to ESPN. Reich was fired midway through the season by the Indianapolis Colts in 2022.

The Panthers’ offense has struggled throughout the 2023 season under Reich. The Panthers ranked 30th in the NFL in total offense, 30th in passing yards per game and 29th in points per game. The numbers spelled trouble for Reich, who has hired because of his reputation as an offensive guru.

Another problem for Reich was the struggles of rookie quarterback Bryce Young, the first overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft.

Young ranks in the lower half of the NFL in completion percentage (62.1%), passing yards per game (187), passer rating (74.7) and QBR (32.0). He has thrown nine touchdowns and eight interceptions and been 40 times in 11 games this season.
