Carter sees two write-in winners

On Tuesday, Carter County residents took to the voting booths.

In the county, Donald Trump won with 8,981 votes to Kamala Harris' 2,305.

While the race at the top of county ballots was not competitive, several races and issues saw close margins across the county.

Contested races

The Grayson City Council had the most candidates of any race in the region, as nine candidates battled for six seats.

The candidates received between 9 and 14% of the vote totals. The fifth- through eighth-place finishers each received 10% of the vote.

Bradley Cotten was the top recipient with 590 votes, followed by Dustin Burchett with 560 votes. Jennifer McGlone also received more than 500 votes, tallying 509.

The next five vote totals were within 31 votes.

Sudy Walker had 450, Willis Johnson 434 and Tersa Griffith 430 to secure the final three seats.

Michael Harper's 420 was one better than Terry Stamper's 419, while Jason Davis finished with 366 votes.

Michael Sammons was elected to the County Board of Education in the 1st District. Sammons's 744 votes beat Rachal Fankell's 692 and Melissa Carte's 302.

Brooke Holley was elected to the County Board of Education 3rd District. Holley's 992 votes beat Michael Burnett's 792.

County residents voted in favor of Constitutional Amendment 1 with a tally of 6,628 to 3,637.

County residents voted against Constitutional Amendment 2 with a tally of 7,220 to 3,570.

Carter County residents voted to allow licensed medicinal cannabis dispensaries or other related businesses in the county with 6,856 votes to 3,850 votes.

Write-in winners

Five candidates were on the ballot for six seats on the Olive Hill city council.

Chris Bledsoe was the top vote recipient with 361, followed by Kirk Wilburn with 342, then Erik Rayburn was third with 326, Shane Tackett was fourth with 319 and Shannon Leadingham was fifth with 310.

Two write-in candidates received votes. James Williams bested Harry Justice 131 to 25 for the final seat.

Four seats as Soil and Water Conservation Supervisors were available. Ballots had three names on them. John Buck was the top vote getter with 4,569 votes. Will Davis had 4,054 and Herbie Suttles had 3,736 votes.

Brandon LaVoie had a total of nine votes to place fourth.

Unopposed races

Carter County residents in the 4th Congressional District elected Thomas Massie with 1,271 votes.

Hal Rogers got 7,929 votes to be reelected in the U.S. Representative 5th Congressional District.

Democrat Larry Thompson received 7,618 votes for Circuit Clerk.

Patrick Ferry ran for board of education in the 4th Educational District and got 1,129 votes.

Patrick Flannery (R) received 7,929 votes for the 96th Representative District.

Brandon Ison (D) got 6,348 votes for Commonwealth's Attorney for the 37th Judicial Court.
