Here's a look at each candidate.

Catherine S. Read (D)

Catherine S. Read was elected to her first term as mayor in November 2022, becoming the city's first female mayor.

Read has lived in a number of Fairfax's neighborhoods since 2000. Those include Daniels Run Woods, Providence Square, and Fairchester Woods. Reid and her husband have three children.

The graduate of George Mason University has a B.A. in Government and Politics.

According to Read's campaign website , her priorities include continuing to work to make housing attainable for everyone, advocating for policies that expand the availability of housing, using the example of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).

Climate change is another issue of importance to Read. She said she wants to keep investing in CUE buses, make areas more walkable and continue to develop more bike lanes and bike-share stations to reduce the use of cars.

Additionally, Read said gun violence prevention, traffic safety, first responder recruitment and retention efforts, and programs to support small businesses, especially those owned by women and minorities, are priorities.

Susan Hartley Kuiler (I)

Susan Hartley Kuiler and her family have lived in Fairfax for almost 40 years.

Hartley Kuiler has worked in the public and private sectors, including in software development, program management and investment control.

According to Hartley Kuiler's campaign website , one of the things of which she's most proud is helping to build the disaster response and recovery systems for FEMA.

Some of Hartley Kuiler's priorities include ensuring public safety, preserving green areas, addressing issues with the homeless population, and supporting local businesses.

Hartley Kuiler said she would promote diverse housing options through public-private partnerships as well as by assisting potential home buyers in the process.

Hartley Kuiler said she would work to advance the city's transportation goals while taking into account the enviroment. One way she would achieve that is by using existing roads that are well-lit, safe, and have little traffic to connect city neighborhoods.

The last day of in-person, early voting is November 2 at 5 p.m. Election Day is Nov. 5.
