A volunteer firefighter has become Cayuga Community College's latest student trustee.

Hannah Iozzio was sworn in as the student representative for the college's board of trustees during a meeting at its Fulton campus on Thursday, the college said in a news release.

Iozzio started at the college during the spring 2024 semester and is majoring in liberal arts and sciences: humanities and social sciences. She is also a volunteer firefighter with the town of Victory, and hopes to eventually join the college's nursing program and become a pediatric or labor and delivery nurse.

"I wanted to get a complete appreciation and understanding of student life and opportunities at Cayuga, and I thought the best way to do that was to run to be our student trustee," she said. "I'm looking forward to representing students and trying to give them a better understanding of how our college operates so they can build a stronger connection with Cayuga."

Tony Franceschelli, the board's chair, and Dr. Brian Durant, the college's president, praised Iozzio's determination to connect with her fellow students and learn as much as possible.

"Hannah represents the best qualities of our students. She's enthusiastic about her education, wants to support other students, and is already preparing for her future career," Franceschelli said. "Her interest in continuing to help strengthen the connection students have with Cayuga will make her an excellent student trustee."
