It has been a long time coming, and not without hurdles, but celebrity landscaper Jamie Durie has finally moved in to his six-storey mega-mansion.

Construction has been completed on the stunning Avalon Beach location, two years after Durie managed to get his proposed build for a $2.7million home approved .

Speaking to Woman's Day , Durie, 53, said the home had been a 'lifelong dream' that took more than a decade to realise.

'It's been a lifelong dream of mine to build an off-the-grid house,' he said.

'Ten years ago I sketched the house. We lodged the plans five years ago and then the last two years has been construction.'

But the dream has not been without a few nightmares for Durie along the way.

The landscaping guru was granted approval in April 2022 by the Northern Beaches Council over his development application (DA) for the waterfront property, despite receiving more than 50 objections from angry locals.

His plans to knock down a 1960s cottage and replace it with a sprawling six-storey mansion for his family was first met with opposition from neighbours who objected to the removal of 17 native trees.

Durie previously clarified 1518 native and endemic species will be planted on and around the property.

'We've rectified the issue and I have sent a letter to all the neighbours and the council explaining what's happening and so hopefully they will see with our new plans,' he said on Today Extra in 2021.

Neighbours then had an issue with whether the home's construction would impact the ecosystem of a local microbat colony.

Durie admitted to Woman's Day that he was 'sorry' for the stress the gargantuan build had put on his fiancé Ameka Jane and their children, daughter Beau, three, and son Nash, one.

'It's been the toughest project I have ever taken on in my whole life,' Durie said.

'I'm sorry for the stress this has put on our family.'

Durie added that despite reservations about the build from neighbours, opinions are changing now the eco-friendly home is completed.

'Everyone assumed it was going to be this mega-mansion but now they can see all the gardens going in on the rooftops and all the solar panels the sentiment is changing and we're getting lots of beautiful letters,' he added.

The build is the subject of Durie's new show on 7Plus, Growing Home With Jamie Durie, which premiered in October.

Speaking to TV Week in October, Durie said the show had also been a labour of love that had taken three years to come to fruition.

'We've been filming this show for three years now and, while we were growing the home, we've being growing the family as well,' he said.

'Not only will you meet the family through the build, you'll also see the birth of our baby boy!'

It's been a busy year for Durie. In October, he dropped $3.6 million on a Byron Bay hinterland retreat near the popular tourist haven Nashua.

Called 'Akubra', the creek-side farmhouse boats a sprawling 30ha of land which can house up to 40 head of cattle, more than 300 sheep, chickens, llamas and goats.

The television presenter will also enjoy a five-hole golf course, fire pit and a lagoon-style pool, reported Realestate.com.au.

With three-bedrooms to the main family home, the property also comes with a separate cottage, large farm shed and six paddocks.

Surrounded by tropical plants, fruit trees, a large vegetable garden and macadamia trees, Jamie will be in his element as a celebrity gardener.
