Central PA helps states swept by Helene

S.Chen31 min ago

Million were in Helene's destructive path. Some Central Pennsylvania groups have headed out to volunteer their services.

Such as Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS). MDS is local to Lititz. But they have staff and volunteers all over the country, which comes in handy, as they want to help out North Carolina.

"So we have a volunteer who's worked with us for a long time and been in some leadership roles, who lives just near Asheville and so he's been keeping us apprized of what's taking place,"Jesse Huxman, Mennonite Disaster Service Communications Manager, said.

MDS executive director, Kevin King, and MDS volunteers immediately responded. And with a local contact in Asheville, they have the insight to bring items that people don't normally think of.

"We have a trailer or two coming from Lancaster County. And on that trailer are chainsaws and skid steers and some of those things that are needed just to move mud and dirt and tree limbs out of the way, off the road," Huxman said.

Even though Mennonite Disaster Service is a faith-based organization, they help anyone in need, regardless of their beliefs.

"So really, it's part of our faith and our belief that, we need to be working with our fellow human beings who need assistance," Huxman said.

MDS's Kevin King was in Asheville when he spoke with CBS 21's . King said, he saw long lines at grocery stores and at gas stations. He was worried that people might not have enough fuel supply.

The cell phone signals were poor as well, as wireless service towers are still being restored, King said.

Red Cross of Central PA said, there are two virtual volunteers from Central PA supporting "reconnecting loved ones" in North Carolina. This is timely, as people may not be able to get in touch with their friends and families in North Carolina due to damages caused by Helene.

MDS said, if anyone would like to help, funding donations will be appreciated. Or, sign up on their website to volunteer.
