Chamberlain to be inducted into Nebraska Baseball HOF
Joba Chamberlain will be one of six people inducted into the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame.
The annual Hall of Fame banquet is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 17 at Country Cookin' Restaurant and Event Center, which is the home of the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame.
Chamberlain was a Lincoln Northeast graduate who earned second-team Super-State honors. He began his college career at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. During his freshman year, he posted 40 strikeouts and four complete games in eight starts.
The next year, after transferring to the University of Nebraska, he helped the Cornhuskers to the 2005 College World Series. He finished that season with a 10-2 record with 130 strikeouts in 118 2/3 innings. He was picked First-Team All-Big 12.
In 2006, Chamberlain was picked 41st overall in the Major League Baseball draft by the New York Yankees. He made his major league debut with the Yankees on Aug. 7, 2007. On June 3, 2008, he made his first Major League start against the Blue Jays. On June 25, he earned his first career win as a starting pitcher throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Pirates.
Chamberlain pitched for the Yankees from 2007 through 2013, the Tigers from 2014-2016, the Royals in 2015 and the Indians in 2019. He helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series. He had a 25-21 record in the MLB with a 3.81 ERA and 546 strikeouts.
During his college career, Chamberlain also played one summer with the Beatrice Bruins semi-pro team.
Others to be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Nov. 17 include Crete manager Henry "Fuzz' Bals; Springfield Mo. player Dan Boever; Fremont umpire Terry Gilfry; Omaha player Jerry Gomez; Ord player Rich Osentowski; Omaha player Steve Spurgeon; and Stromsburg player Brad Stallings.
The Hall of Fame doors will open at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 with the banquet beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets for the event are $35 for adults and $20 for students 16 and under. Those interested in tickets can contact Bob Steinkamp at 402-239-8000.
