Champions of the Heart teaches lifesaving skills to broadcast students

DETROIT, Mich. (WILX) - Students had a chance to learn life-saving skills while exploring careers in broadcasting. Champions of the Heart Foundation held in-person CPR training Thursday at the Great Lakes Broadcasting and Sports Media Academy at Ford Field in Detroit. Champions of the Heart was started by former Michigan State University assistant basketball coach Mike Garland after he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. He launched his nonprofit to help train others in hands-only CPR -the skill used by the two strangers who helped save his life. "I think we will be close to over a thousand people that we have trained after today in a short period of time, and in those thousands... someone... maybe more than one... will actually save someone's life," Garland said. Champions of the Heart Foundation holds CPR and AED training across the country.
