charged with 2nd-degree murder in Las Vegas teen beating death; DA says another arrest made
Four teens have been formally charged with in the beating death of a 17-year-old Las Vegas teen, Jonathan Lewis Jr.
appeared in court Tuesday for arraignment after criminal complaints were filed on Monday. Each was accompanied by his own attorney.
Judge Nadia Wood ordered them to be transferred to juvenile detention. There was no discussion regarding bail, meaning they will remain held with a no-bail setting for now.
After the hearing, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said his office filed second-degree murder charges because there wasn't advanced premeditation to warrant open murder.
Wolfson also said another arrest was made in the case, bringing the total number of arrests in . He did not name the suspect but said they are in juvenile court.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police previously said they were searching for two persons of interest in the case. It's unclear if the latest arrest is one of those people.
Four other teens, ages 13 to 15, were arrested and are currently in the Juvenile Justice Court system. Wolfson said his office is still working to determine if it will seek adult certification for each of those teens.
Lewis was hospitalized with severe head trauma and other injuries after the Nov. 1 attack and died a week later, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.
The fight appeared to be over a pair of stolen wireless headphones and possibly a marijuana a vape pen, stolen from Lewis or his friends, police said.
