Charleston Middle School student arrested for making threats

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — A middle school student from Charleston has been arrested and detained for two felony juvenile charges.

Charleston Police posted on Facebook Friday evening the student allegedly made a threat to a different student, threatened to pull a fire alarm, and threatened to commit more violence on school grounds. Concerned students and school workers reported the threats to administration, and they contacted police.

The student was detained on Friday for a Making a Terrorist Threat (a Class X felony) and Disorderly Conduct (a Class 4 felony). The juvenile was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held at a Juvenile Detention Center while waiting for a court hearing.

Police said the student and school officials cooperated with the investigation. Officers found no threats was put he school community in immediate danger.

Police also said there was no indication that this incident was connected to the earlier reports of non-local threats on social media to schools.

"We take any threats of violence against our schools seriously," Charleston Police said in the Facebook post. "The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community is our top priority. Threats of this nature, whether actionable or not, will result in immediate action to ensure the safety of everyone involved."

Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to call the Charleston Police Department. Police officials continue to ask for the community's assistance in reporting any suspicious behavior or threats to the appropriate authorities.
