In Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals , Kansas City passed on 47% of its plays. On "Sunday Night Football" — with starting running back Isiah Pacheco replaced by undrafted rookie Carson Steele — the Chiefs still passed the ball less than usual. 53% of the offensive snaps were passes. With Pacecho out, Steele was in for 64% of the offensive snaps. His use was weighted toward running plays. This season, Pacheco's use has typically been higher — ranging from 70% to 80% — and more equally distributed between passing and passing plays. This was in contrast to last season, when Pacheo's snaps leaned significantly toward running plays in most games. In Sunday's game, Samaje Perine made up the difference in both offensive snaps and passing plays. Tight end Travis Kelce's snaps were down a bit from the first two weeks of the season — but it wasn't because the team was giving him time off. Noah Gray's offensive snaps were down by a like amount, while Jared Wiley's percentages remained steady. The Chiefs simply favored tight ends a little less in Sunday's game. This meant that wide receivers (as a group) got a little more work than they have been seeing. Still, most of them saw their use drop slightly — except for JuJu Smith-Schuster, whose use jumped to 55% of the offensive snaps. That was more than twice what we have seen from him in the season's first two weeks. Defense All Pass Run Total 56 (100%) 31 (100%) 25 (100%) Bryan Cook 56 (100%) 31 (100%) 25 (100%) Trent McDuffie 56 (100%) 31 (100%) 25 (100%) Justin Reid 54 (96%) 31 (100%) 23 (92%) Jaylen Watson 52 (93%) 28 (90%) 24 (96%) Drue Tranquill 50 (89%) 26 (84%) 24 (96%) Nick Bolton 46 (82%) 24 (77%) 22 (88%) Chamarri Conner 45 (80%) 26 (84%) 19 (76%) Chris Jones 44 (79%) 28 (90%) 16 (64%) George Karlaftis 44 (79%) 25 (81%) 19 (76%) Tershawn Wharton 43 (77%) 22 (71%) 21 (84%) Michael Danna 40 (71%) 25 (81%) 15 (60%) Nazeeh Johnson 23 (41%) 17 (55%) 6 (24%) Felix Anudike-Uzomah 13 (23%) 4 (13%) 9 (36%) Leo Chenal 13 (23%) 6 (19%) 7 (28%) Mike Pennel 13 (23%) 5 (16%) 8 (32%) Derrick Nnadi 9 (16%) 4 (13%) 5 (20%) Malik Herring 7 (13%) 5 (16%) 2 (8%) Jack Cochrane 6 (11%) 3 (10%) 3 (12%) Jaden Hicks 2 (4%) 0 (0%) 2 (8%) Defensive takeaways We continued to see Justin Reid, Bryan Cook, Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson be the secondary's prime defenders, appearing in virtually every defensive snap. Linebacker Nick Bolton is normally in that group, but he left the field for a sequence of plays after being shaken up midway through the fourth quarter. Drue Tranquill picked up the slack. Leo Chenal had his lowest usage of the season — just 23% of the total defensive snaps — but that was largely because the Chiefs opted to lean away from their linebackers against the Falcons. They averaged 2.05 on the field for every play — down from 2.45 in Week 1. Nazeeh Johnson now appears to have taken over the third cornerback role previously filled by Joshua Williams. In Week 1, Johnson played only on special teams, while Williams played 41% of the defensive snaps. Now those tables have been turned. For the first time this season, Williams' use was restricted to special teams, while Johnson was in for — you guessed it — 41% of the defensive snaps. While the team continues to list him as a safety, he's being used almost exclusively as a corner — mostly in passing situations — and continues to get significant use on special teams. On Sunday, Chamarri Conner had his biggest use of the season, playing 80% of the defensive snaps. While the team continues to list him as a defensive back, he's being used all over the field. In defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's scheme, that makes him a player in the mold of former Kansas City safety Tyrann Mathieu. Henceforth, our Chiefs roster page will now list Johnson as a cornerback and Conner as a safety. Because GSIS data ignores plays that were nullified by penalties, total offensive and defensive snap counts will vary from other sources, which get their data from NFL Gamebooks
