MADERA, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Officers with the California Highway Patrol will host a new class to prepare young drivers to drive responsibly in California.

CHP says they will be hosting "Start Smart," a free driving education class for new drivers and their parents. The class addresses topics such as safe driving practices, the rules of the road, new driving license requirements, tips on how to avoid a crash and more.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety , teen drivers involved in fatal crashes (age 15 to 20) increased 14.8% from 413 in 2020 to 474 in 2021.

Officers say the class is an effort to prepare young drivers to drive responsibly and to help teenage drivers become more aware of the responsibilities of being a licensed California driver.

The class will be held on Sept. 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the CHP Madera Area at 3051 Airport Dr. in Madera. Officers say there are limited seats for this class. To RSVP, contact the Madera CHP Area office at 559-507-8120.
