City leaders celebrate new addition of Atlanta’s Beltline along Piedmont Park

City leaders gathered near Piedmont Park for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Atlanta Beltline Northeast Trail - Segment 1 on Tuesday.

The newly completed 0.9-mile section is the latest addition to the Beltline mainline loop.

The new segment begins at the intersection of 10th Street and Monroe Drive and extends along Piedmont Park to Westminster Drive, linking the Midtown, Virginia Highland, and Morningside neighborhoods.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Atlanta City Councilmember Alex Wan, Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett, Atlanta Public School Board Member Ken Zeff, and Sam Green, President & Chairperson of the Midtown Neighborhood Alliance were among those who attended.

Former U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, a New York Republican who resigned from Congress following a tax fraud conviction, is paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from a horse during a polo tournament, according to friends who are raising funds to pay for the ex-lawmaker's medical care. Grimm, 54, suffered the devastating injury in September and is now being treated at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, where the late actor Christopher Reeve was treated after a similar equestrian accident in 1995, according to Vincent Ignizio, a friend of Grimm's who is a former New York City Council member. "It was a passion of his and he suffered a tragic accident at the end of September," said Ignizio, who has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for Grimm's medical care.

A judge recused himself Tuesday from presiding over Arizona's fake electors case after an email surfaced in which he told fellow judges to speak out against attacks on Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign for the presidency. An arrest report gives more details about what occurred before a man was shot to death Wednesday in the 3200 block of West Edgewood Avenue. Investigators observed surveillance video that showed the victim driving an orange Chevrolet Camaro with orange rims at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and New Kings Road, according to the JSO arrest report for Lavertis Reed, 20, who was charged with murder in the shooting.
