BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — The City of Beckley is a gateway to the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, and Beckley officials said on Thursday, October 17, 2024, that local residents could expect to see more emphasis on regional outdoor activities in the near future.

Mitch Lehman, director of the Beckley Office of Outdoor Economic Development, said the strategy is to transform the region's natural beauty into economic opportunity for the people.

He said that a main attraction, the 615-acre Piney Creek Preserve on Stanaford Mine Road behind Brandy's Muffler, has already become well-loved by local residents, who enjoy viewing the waterfalls.

"We've been doing a lot of great work down there. We've had a couple of grants come in, one from Beckley Area Foundation to do improvements to the Wildwood Hollow Trail Head, and then another one from Moutain RC&D to improve the trailhead, to make it more accessible to all kinds of different visitors," said Lehman.

City officials said the Beckley Outdoor Economic Development Plan will develop infrastructure by enhancing trails, parks and recreation facilities, engage the community by fostering a culture of outdoor activity, grow the economy and protect and preserve the environment.

City officials said the plan can impact the region by continuing to attract tourists.

"It's something that we will continue to work on," said Beckley Parks and Recreation Director Leslie Baker. "It's part of our comprehensive plan, and it's a long, ambitious plan, but we certainly hope we can work on it little bits at a time, until we get it completed."
