City of Irvine to Unveil First Class IV Bikeway at Cadence and Benchmark
The City of Irvine will unveil its first Class IV protected bikeway at the intersection of Cadence and Benchmark on Tuesday, November 19, from 4-5 p.m.
A Class IV protected bikeway is a lane dedicated to bicyclists that is physically separated from drivers on the road. All bicycle types are allowed to ride in the Class IV bikeway, including e-bikes of all classes.
This new bikeway lane creates a more bike-friendly City and an environmentally-friendly opportunity for travel throughout Irvine.
"The addition of a Class IV Bikeway to Irvine's vast bikeway and trail system is what will continue to set the City of Irvine apart as a premier bike destination," said Mayor Farrah N. Khan. "With 113.24 miles of off-street bikeway trails and 286.42 lane miles of on-street bikeways, Irvine offers a safe, sustainable transportation system and extensive leisure opportunities.
In addition, the City's first new electric street sweeper will be unveiled at the event. This innovative addition to the City's fleet will demonstrate how bikeways will be kept clean and well-maintained, while preserving the environment.
The creation of the Class IV bikeway and the introduction of the electric street sweeper to the City's fleet are two steps forward in the City's ambitious goals in our Climate Action and Adaptation Plan to reach aggressive emissions reduction targets by 2030 and beyond.
In 2021, the City of Irvine embarked on developing its first Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP). The CAAP will set ambitious but achievable emissions reduction targets for the City and lays out a pathway to achieving our climate goals across both municipal operations and our community. Through thoughtfully planned greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction and climate adaptation measures, the CAAP will build upon Irvine's previous steps towards climate leadership in Orange County to create a truly climate-smart City for the future.
