Claims Katie Britt lied about voting for Rick Scott to lead Senate are ‘misinformation,’ spokesperson says

A spokesperson for U.S. Katie Britt, R-Ala., said claims circulating on social media that the Alabama Republican lied about voting for Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., for Senate majority leader are untrue.

Laura Loomer, a right wing activist who has claimed 9/11 was an "inside job" and was seen with President-elect Donald Trump on the campaign trail, posted on X - formerly Twitter - Wednesday that an "insider who works for a U.S. Senator" told her Britt was lying about her secret ballot vote.

"She (Britt) put out this press release saying she supported Rick Scott, it's all over her socials, but we know 100 percent she didn't. She just wants political cover," the insider said, according to Loomer who posted the quote on X.

Britt stated in a press release Wednesday that she had used her "first" vote to elect Sen. Scott but that she supports the winner of the election, Senate Minority Whip John Thune of South Dakota who was elected Wednesday to lead Republicans in the Senate.

Britt's office said Wednesday that allegations she did not vote for Sen. Scott are "misinformation."

"Some Senate members chose to abstain from the initial vote, which explains the disparity between the two votes. Senator Britt voted for Rick Scott on the first ballot," Britt Spokesperson Amy Hasenberg told AL.com in an e-mail Wednesday.

On his X page on Wednesday, Sen. Mike Lee, who hosted a forum on Tuesday night for Senators vying for the leadership role to answer questions, an event Britt attended, thanked her for supporting Sen. Scott's efforts.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On his X page, Scott affirmed that Britt voted for him.
