CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Six firefighters and paramedics were honored for their efforts in saving the life of a patient in February of 2023.

In a post to Facebook Tuesday, Cleveland Fire shared the story of the heroic actions taken by the crews.

Officials say members of engine 40 responded to a house on Neff Road February 18, where they found a large patient in cardiac arrest.

What made the job more challenging, according to the post, was that the patient was wedged between the bed and wall on the second floor.

Firefighters say Captain Eric Ross and 4th Grade Firefighter Darren Duhaney removed the patient, Firefighter Eric Blake readied defibrillator pads, and 3rd Grade Firefighter Brooklynn Cistrunk performed CPR.

EMS arrived shortly after, officials say, and Paramedics Christopher Shenk and Matthew Lanzaretta administered multiple shocks, and continuous CPR, and the patient's pulse returned.

Firefighters say the patient's breathing resumed and he was transported to Euclid hospital.

"For their teamwork, skill and professionalism in rescuing a patient from a tight spot, members of Engine 40 and EMS Unit 40 receive the Meritorious Service Award," The post from the fire department reads.
