College Corner: Dallas’ Monk working his way back on the wrestling mat
After a few years away from the sport, Ryan Monk is back on the mat competing in wrestling.
The redshirt junior from Dallas was one of the state’s top heavyweights in high school for the Mountaineers before choosing to walk on to the Penn State football team to start his college career.
Now Monk is at North Carolina Pembroke competing with the Braves wrestling team.
“Ryan’s adaptation to the team was slow at first, mostly because he was in a new environment,” coach O.T. Johnson said. “He was not able to compete in the fall semester and trying to understand his role on the team. Once he was able to compete after exams, you could see both joy and uncertainty, which is common for anyone that has been away from a sport four years would have.”
Monk, who competes at 285 pounds, was a standout wrestler at Dallas. He had a career record of 141-35 and finished 39-5 and placed third in the PIAA championships his senior year. With Pembroke, he’s 4-7 overall and 4-5 in dual meets with a pin.
Johnson doesn’t think that Monk’s time away from the sport due to football has slowed his progress.
“The athleticism and knowledge of wrestling is and always was there,” Johnson said. “The biggest thing he’s catching up with is his confidence on the mat.”
The coach has seen Monk gaining more and more of that with each match.
“The more he wrestles, the more you can see his confidence coming back both in his wrestling and his conditioning,” Johnson said. “We understand that this is a marathon, and it’s going to take time to get him where he needs to be and where we need him to be.”
Monk and the coaching staff will find out how far he’s come back when the Braves travel to West Liberty, W.Va., on Feb. 1 for the Mountain East Conference Championship.
