College football on TV: Ohio State-Michigan headlines final weekend

V.Davis3 months ago

Nine teams have realistic hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff entering the regular season’s final weekend, and all but one of them are favored on the point spread (the only team on the list that isn’t favored is Ohio State against fellow playoff hopeful Michigan). Now would be just about the perfect time for things to go haywire in a season that hasn’t seen much chaos.

Here is the college football television schedule for Friday and Saturday. All times Eastern.

Friday’s games

According to the Big 12, there are 128 possible combinations in the race for the conference’s championship game. Sitting at 6-2 in conference play, Oklahoma remains alive for a berth entering Friday’s game against TCU, and the Sooners will remain alive no matter the result (at least until Saturday). They’ll earn a berth with a win if Texas beats Texas Tech later Friday and Oklahoma State loses to BYU on Saturday. The Longhorns, who are sitting atop the Big 12 standings at 7-1 in conference play, will earn a berth by beating the Red Raiders. ...

With Oregon off to the Big Ten after this season, Friday night’s matchup between the Ducks and Oregon State could be the last Civil War game for the foreseeable future, though the schools reportedly are working to continue the series starting next season. Oregon probably would need to get out of a scheduled 2024 home game against Boise State for the in-state rivalry to continue. As far as this year’s game is concerned, Oregon will clinch a rematch with Washington in the Pac-12 championship game by beating the Beavers, with the winner of the conference title game almost certainly earning a spot in the College Football Playoff in that scenario.

Ohio State or Michigan has represented the Big Ten East Division in each of the past six conference championship games, and that streak will continue with the winner of Saturday’s game earning a date with Iowa in Indianapolis on Dec. 2. The Wolverines will again be without Coach Jim Harbaugh, who will continue to serve his three-game suspension over violations of league sportsmanship rules with regards to the Michigan sign-stealing scandal. The Buckeyes and Wolverines possess perhaps the two best defenses in the country, which could keep the score low after a few years of high-scoring games in the series (the past four meetings have averaged 80.3 points). ...

Oklahoma State also is in the convoluted Big 12 mix, and there are scenarios in which the Cowboys reach the championship game, the most straightforward being a win over BYU plus a Texas win over Texas Tech on Friday. They could also get there with a loss, plus an Oklahoma loss to TCU on Friday and a Kansas State loss to Iowa State later Saturday. ... Surprising Arizona could end up in the Pac-12 championship game, though it would take a Wildcats win over Arizona State plus an Oregon State upset of Oregon on Friday. Still, considering the fact Arizona was picked to finish eighth in the Pac-12 preseason poll, even to be in the conversation on the season’s final weekend must be a pleasant surprise in Tucson. ...

Kansas State could be hosting Iowa State with a berth in the Big 12 title game on the line. Or this game could be meaningless apart from bowl-game positioning. The Cyclones have gotten themselves bowl eligible at 6-5 despite having a languid offense, especially when it comes to running the ball: Among Big 12 teams, only Baylor and BYU average fewer rushing yards per game than Iowa State, which ranks 129th nationally in rushing success rate and is coming off a game in which it managed only nine rushing yards on 21 carries against Texas.
