College notebook: Bentz makes an early-season splash
It's still early in the college swimming season, but Caroline Bentz is on pace to be a factor at the end of the season.
At last weekend's N.C. State Invitational, the Virginia Tech senior from King George High School swam the fastest women's 200-yard backstroke (1:52.43) in the nation this season. It was a personal best, the No. 2 time in Hokies history and qualified her for next spring's NCAA championship meet.
Bentz also placed second in the 100 back (52.55) and third in the 200 individual medley (1:58.51) at the five-team meet and swam on two top-five relays.
