Sara Silvetti, an all-American midfielder who led Crestwood to a state
field hockey championship, recently made a verbal commitment to continue her
academic and athletic pursuits at the University of Maryland.
Silvetti won’t put her decision in writing until February, when she signs
an NCAA Division I letter of intent. Her verbal commitment isn’t binding and
she can change her mind, but it ends the recruiting process because other
schools are no longer allowed to contact her.
Silvetti made official visits to Ball State University and the University
of Massachusetts, and made her decision after visiting the College Park, Md.
campus last weekend. Her decision means she’ll be going from a state
championship team to a national championship team and be reunited with a
former teammate.
Silvetti was a vital part of Crestwood’s drive to this year’s PIAA Class 2A
state title. She started all 26 games at left midfield for the Comets, scored
Even more valuable was her savvy and leadership on a team that featured nine
first-year starters but matured and captured the program’s second state title.
Maryland won the 1999 NCAA Division I national championship, with Crestwood
graduate Carissa Messimer playing a huge role in the title game. Messimer
scored the winning goal as the Terps defeated the University of Michigan, 2-1.
Messimer, a freshman, scored 14 goals and had two assists for Maryland (24-1,
Atlantic Coast Conference champions).
As a senior, Silvetti was named a first-team all-American by the National
Field Hockey Coaches Association, as was Messimer. Silvetti finished her
career at Crestwood with 44 goals and 27 assists. She was second-team
all-state as a sophomore, and a first-team pick each of the past two years.
She was a first-team Wyoming Valley Conference all-star as a sophomore, junior
and senior.
In the classroom, Silvetti is a member of the National Honor Society. She
has a 4.1 grade point average (weighted for advanced placement courses) and
was named to the academic all-state squad in field hockey. Sara Silvetti
