Community rallies for boy killed while riding bike to school 1 year ago

LITTLETON, Colo. ( KDVR ) — Family, friends, classmates and the community are walking and biking Thursday morning to honor Liam Stewart, a seventh grader who was killed on his morning commute to school one year ago today.

"Come out and help us celebrate Liam and promote safer streets. For our kids. And for all of us," said the event coordinators on the Ride For Liam website .

Liam was hit on Oct. 17, 2023, while on his everyday route to Euclid Middle School at around 8:04 a.m. at South Elati Street and West Arapahoe Drive, according to the Littleton Police Department.

Following the crash, 39-year-old Beth Ann Hutchinson of Littleton was cited in the death of the middle school student. She pleaded guilty to her citation and was sentenced to 24 months of probation and 150 hours of community service.

Police said Hutchinson stayed on scene following the crash.

"Please join us as we remember Liam's impact on the world and advocate for safer pathways to schools, libraries, parks, and community centers," the website said. "Everyone is invited."

The event will begin in front of Euclid Middle School with a rally and some words from Liam's family and friends. Then, the "Ride For Liam" gathering will proceed on foot and on bikes to Bemis Public Library. At the library, community members will dedicate a new stone bench in honor of Liam's memory on the library's front lawn.

— Meet at the west parking lot at Euclid Middle School (Everyone is encouraged to walk or ride to Euclid Middle School since the school is having conferences that day and parking will be limited)

— Brief comments by the Stewart family and close friends

— Walk and ride bikes together to Bemis Library

— Bench dedication by the city of Littleton and the Stewart family

Liam was said to have loved his Boy Scout troop, loved to play the cello and enjoyed being outdoors.
