BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Jefferson County students had the chance to learn about mental wellness Saturday afternoon.

City Walk BHAM was taken over Saturday afternoon by the Community Teen Summit, vendors, performances and mental health resources to ensure students have everything they need to be successful.

"They are going through a lot of stuff, they need us to guide them, they need us to provide resources and experiences and all the things," said Makella Moore Harris, the founder of Fine Arts Find Life.

The summit had all the things Harris talked about. Fine Arts Find Life, the organization running the event, invited vendors and all types of community organizations to connect with students,

"We offer six free counseling sessions, so we are able to give people cards and let them know we offer free counseling," said Yvas Witherspoon, a cofounder of Brother Let's Talk, a nonprofit who strives end the stigma around mental health issues black men are facing.

The fair had than just mental health resources. Black Alabamians for Education, a group dedicated to helping black families through their education journey, had a booth to let families know they aren't alone.

"We think it's important that parents know the state of education in the state of Alabama so they can make informed decisions for their students," said Lakendra Thomas.

Some students even had the chance to perform on stage, Cedrick Johnson was at the fair with his whole family, and his oldest child was singing.

"I think it gives the kids something to channel their energy and attention too," said Johnson.

Fine Arts Find Life holds events throughout the year to promote mental health. More resources and information on the organization can be found here.
