Concerned about home rule charter [letter]

B.Lee26 min ago

Dear members of the Lancaster community:

I am writing to express deep concerns about the potential implications of the proposed Lancaster city home rule charter on moderate-income and low-income residents, as well as its impact on our local government's structure.

While affordable housing is essential, the charter's approach risks compromising the livelihoods of those it aims to support.

Under this proposal, the government gains extensive power over land use and housing, raising concerns about a lack of community involvement in decisions affecting our neighborhoods. This could lead to regulations that, while aiming to increase affordable housing, might not account for the unique challenges moderate- and low-income families face. Forced density measures may reduce housing options without addressing the underlying needs, ultimately limiting personal choice and creating undue strain on existing infrastructure.

Additionally, the expanded governmental control outlined in this proposed charter, in my view, bears resemblance to socialist/communist models, where centralized authority makes key decisions without adequate public input. This structure risks eroding the democratic principles that Lancaster values, restricting local voices and reducing community autonomy.

I urge our community to reconsider and vote "no" on this proposed charter and advocate for an approach that truly reflects our values. Together, we can create solutions for affordable housing that respect both the livelihood of residents and the democratic principles Lancaster holds dear.
