(QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A man accused of shooting at a special tactics unit member during a standoff is now dead, the Catawba County Sheriff's Office said on Tuesday. Deputies responded to a suicide call around 8:41 p.m. Monday inside a home on Rifle Ridge Road. Deputies came upon Michael Rose, who was armed with a gun and refused to cooperate while threatening to take his own life. The attempts to get Rose to communicate went on through 1 a.m. until what was believed to be a gunshot was heard inside the home and then smoke could be seen coming from the inside. Members of a special tactics unit then entered the home and during that time, Rose shot at a tactics unit member, who then returned fire, fatally striking Rose. An elderly woman inside the home was safely removed from the house during the incident, deputies said. NCSBI is involved in the investigation. The trial began Tuesday for a man accused of holding down a teenage boy so colleagues could rape him at a New Hampshire youth center in the 1990s, with prosecutors saying a brutal crime took place and the defense saying that it never happened and that the accuser was motivated by money. It's the second criminal trial to stem from a broad 2019 investigation into historic abuse at the Sununu Youth Services Center in Manchester. Bradley Asbury, now age 70, is among nine men who worked at the Manchester center or an associated facility in Concord who are facing criminal charges.
