Coroner rules death of missing York County fire captain a suicide
A York County fire captain who was found dead in the Susquehanna River died by his own hand, according to the Lancaster County coroner.
The coroner said Tony Bortner, 51, a fire police captain with Laurel Fire Company of Windsor, York County, died of a gunshot wound to the head and ruled the death a suicide Monday.
Crews found Bortner's body in the Susquehanna River on Friday. He had been missing since Oct. 17.
State police found Bortner's vehicle near the Lock 12 Historic Area in Lower Chanceford Township in southeastern York County two days after he was reported missing.
His remains were found in the water near Peavine Island, on the York County side of the river just south of the Norman Wood Bridge, which carries Route 372 between Lancaster and York counties.
