Council asks for opinions on Newlyn cycling and walking plans

Residents of Newlyn in Cornwall have been invited to have their say on proposals for local walking and cycling improvements.

The Cornwall Council plans followed consultation with the local community and included new footpaths, crossing points, closing areas to traffic and changes to parking, the authority said.

Originally developed as part of the Penzance Sustainable Travel Network , the £200,000 proposed scheme is now being funded by the UK government's Shared Prosperity Fund.

Thalia Marrington, Cornwall Council local member, said the scheme would help regenerate the local economy by improving shopfront visibility and increasing footfall.

She said the plans were about making Newlyn work for everyone, whether shopping, cycling, or driving through the town.

"We recognise that there have been some concerns over the loss of parking spaces," she said.

"Addressing these concerns will require us to balance different priorities and work out what we want to achieve.

"We really do want to hear the views of the local community during the consultation and I would encourage everyone to come along to the public exhibition."

Cornwall Council has shared the maps and drawings of the plans online ahead of the consultation.

Feedback from it would be used to inform the final designs for the scheme, it said.

Martin Worth, council cabinet portfolio holder for customers, said the views of the local community were important.

He said: "The results of the consultation will help shape the final designs for the scheme, we won't be introducing measures which are not supported locally."

A drop-in exhibition is due to take place at The Centre on Chywoone Hill between 13:00 BST and 19:00 on Saturday.

Once the final scheme had been agreed, construction was due to take place in 2025, the council said.
