Country part at Devon new town Sherford quadruples in size

The country park element of a new Devon town has quadrupled in size with 2.2km (1.3 miles) of footpaths and cycle paths.

The latest expansion of the Sherford residential development near Plymouth, has "unlocked" 73 acres (30 hectares) of land for public use, the consortium managing it said.

It said the area was still less than 20% of its planned eventual overall size.

Peter Sadler, managing director of Vistry Cornwall South West, part of the Sherford Consortium, said it wanted to ensure "homes are never from accessible outdoor space".

"Enhancing biodiversity and promoting wellbeing are the principles behind creating generous green space at Sherford, and we are pleased to deliver on this promise," he added.

The consortium - a partnership between Taylor Whimpey and Vistry Group - said the park would eventually span more than 500 acres.

The public can now access the new parkland via an accessible entrance at the junction of Orion Drive and Pigeon Lane.

They can also cross the existing football from Gemini Road or access the area on foot or bicycle by the public right of way by West Sherford Farm.

The new cycle paths will also connect to the National Cycle Network.

Councillor John McKay, South Hams District Council's Executive Lead for Climate Change & Biodiversity, said the parkland would provide a "wonderful space" to enjoy the "physical and mental benefits" of the countryside.
