Cowgirls knock off Trojanettes, move to 4-1
Behind a 9-0 run in the first quarter, McMullen County kicked their season off on the right foot with a win Monday night.
The Cowgirls (2-0) picked up backto back wins over Charlotte and Dilley heading into Thanksgiving break with scores of 42-32 and 60-14, respectively.
Coming off the volleyball season, the Cowgirls went straight into basketball with limited practice. Despite a few offensive miscues in their season opener against the Trojanettes, they found their rhythm at times and were able to maintain their lead throughout.
“We’re still really young in the season and we got ourselves in a hole and probably weren’t able to pull away like we should have,” said Cowgirls head coach Shannon Taylor after the win over the Trojanettes. “We had some unforced turnovers but I liked the way that we kind of adjusted during the game. We made some good moves, good passes, we just weren’t able to take care of the ball at points. The hussle was there, we’ll play more and from that we can kind of build on.”
Getting things going offensively was Camie Taylor, who led the team with 16 points and knocked down four 3-pointers in the victory. Jasey Naylor had eight points and Avery Dillard pitched in seven.
Aiming to create a flowing offense, the Cowgirls minimized their turnovers against Dilley. Camie Taylor and Nevaeh Streeter led the way with 21 and 12 points, respectively.
“When (the ball) is in our point guard’s hands or my hands, we can take care of the ball and can get it where it’s supposed to be without having so much chaos,” said Camie.
The Cowgirls do not have a senior on their roster but are determined to prove they can compete.
“I think our whole team, being as young as we are, we’re very fast and just have that kind of ‘out for blood’ sense and that’s for every sport but basketball especially. I just think that we have more opportunities than we did last year,” Naylor added.
The Cowgirls will be on the road next Tuesday at Yorktown before competing in the Poteet Tournament Nov. 30 – Dec. 2. Charlotte will host Pettus on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
