Crash leaves Decatur motorcyclist seriously injured

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A motorcyclist from Decatur was hospitalized after a crash that happened Thursday afternoon left him with serious injuries.

Decatur Police officers were dispatched to the scene of the accident, located at the intersection of Division Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, just before 4 p.m.

Officials said a Hyundai driver stopped at the stop sign before going east where a motorcycle travelling south — where there is no stop sign — hit the back drivers' side door, ejecting the cyclist.

The 21-year-old female Hyundai driver from Decatur was uninjured in the crash. The 38-year-old male motorcyclist, also from Decatur, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the rider of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet and did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his driver's license. Investigators found no evidence the driver of the Hyundai was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The Decatur Police Department's Fatal Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash. There is no further information available at this time.
