WILKES-BARRE — Defense was the name of the game on Wednesday as Crestwood took down Holy Redeemer 2-0 in a WVC field hockey game at Hollenback Field.

Jordan Olenginski scored both goals for the Comets while Dallas Kendra made 11 saves for the shutout.

Goals came at a premium for most of the game as both teams played strong defense and prevented the other squad from getting anything going. Crestwood was on the attack for most of the first half, recording 13 shots on goal, along with seven penalty corners.

The Comets broke through midway through the first half. After a nice pass from Cara Jarmiolowski, Olenginski scored a goal from the left side of the net at 18:49 to put the Comets up 1-0.

“Cara had a nice ball coming out of the circle and set me up very well,” Olenginski said. “I couldn’t have done it without my team.

“We played great as a team today, but we just have to stay focused. We can’t get caught focusing on districts, or states. We have to just take it game by game.”

The second half saw the tables turn a bit as Holy Redeemer went on the offensive, recording seven shots. But the Royals weren’t able to capitalize on any of them.

“I think we countered a lot of what they did, and they did a lot of good things today,” Crestwood interim coach Patsy Moratori said. “We didn’t capitalize on a lot of our opportunities, but all it takes is one to go in.”

The score stayed at 1-0 for most of the second half until Olenginski scored an unassisted goal at 2:36 to make it 2-0.

Redeemer goalie Holly Slowik finished with six saves.

The win gives Crestwood a 7-1-2 record on the season, and also keeps the Comets undefeated on the road with a record of 3-0.

Crestwood will look to gain more momentum on Friday when the Comets host Lewisburg. Holy Redeemer will look to rebound from this loss with an away game at Dallas on Oct. 13.

“We have to just keep playing hard, moving off the ball and don’t settle,” Moratori said. “I liked the way we played today because it wasn’t easy. As long as they know they have to work hard to get where we want to be, I like where this team is going.”
