Crestwood Grad Silvetti Powers Maryland Wins

Sara Silvetti, a Crestwood High School graduate, now a senior on the
University of Maryland field hockey team, scored three goals during the
weekend in a pair of wins for the Terps.

The most eye-catching of the two victories was a 6-0 rout of national power
Old Dominion University, during which Silvetti scored two goals. She also
scored a goal in a 7-1 victory over Drexel.
Also in the win over Drexel, Wyoming Seminary graduate Lauren Powley, a
junior at Maryland, recorded an assist.

Silvetti and Powley are Mountain Top residents who guided their respective
high school teams to state championships as seniors: Silvetti in 1999 with
Crestwood, Powley in 2001 at Seminary.

Other noteworthy accomplishments from the weekend:

A pair of players scored goals for Brown University in a 7-0 victory over
Albany University: Lindsay Boris, a Lake-Lehman graduate who is a junior, and
Samantha Lloyd, a Wyoming Seminary graduate who is a sophomore.

Anne Marie Janus, a Wyoming Valley West graduate who is a freshman at the
University of North Carolina, scored her second goal of the season as the Tar
Heels defeated American University, 2-0, to win the Temple Invitational
Tournament.

Caroline Blaum, a Wyoming Seminary graduate who is a freshman at the
University of Iowa, has earned a starting spot for the Hawkeyes, and has been
the starting right midfielder in all four of Iowa’s games.

Marie Zorzi, a Crestwood High School graduate and a junior at Bloomsburg
University, and Kristy Kropa, a Lackawanna Trail graduate and a sophomore at
Bloomsburg University, scored a pair of goals apiece over the weekend in a
pair of victories for the Huskies. Kropa scored twice in a 6-0 victory over
Mercyhurst. Zorzi had a goal against Mercyhurst, and another in a 3-1 victory
over Assumption.



Pittston Area graduate Rob Corey made his collegiate debut Saturday,
kicking a 25-yard field goal and two extra points for Rochester in its 34-17
loss to Johns Hopkins. Wyoming Area grad Brian Wolcott caught two passes for

a Bishop Hafey graduate, recorded two tackles for Johns Hopkins. Freshman Adam
Winter from Berwick also played for the Blue Jays.

Former Williamsport standout Darrell Blackman made his debut with North
Carolina State, rushing nine times for 62 yards and a touchdown and catching
two passes for 15 yards in the Wolfpack’s 42-0 victory over Richmond.

Two former WVC standouts started on defense for Bucknell in its
season-opening 20-14 loss to Villanova. Outside linebacker Jeff Montagna, of
Pittston Area, recorded five solo tackles and four assists and forced a
fumble. Berwick’s Andy Decker started at defensive end and finished with four
tackles and a forced fumble.

BOYS SOCCER

Former Wyoming Valley Conference standouts Brian Tarulli and Dale Baumes
are members of the Moravian College soccer team. Tarulli, a Coughlin graduate
who earned a letter at Moravian last season, is a sophomore midfielder.
Baumes, a Tunkhannock graduate, is a freshman defender.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Former Crestwood star Michelle Oros put up some impressive numbers for
King’s College in the King’s Volleyball Tournament last weekend at Scandlon
Gymnasium. Oros, a 6-foot junior, had a combined 23 kills, 14 blocks and one
ace in three matches to help lead the Monarchs to the championship.

Oros wasn’t playing at full speed. She suffered an ankle injury in practice
last Thursday and was on crutches the day before the tournament began.

CROSS COUNTRY

Former Bishop Hoban runner Russell Susko and Coughlin graduate Troy
Clawson will compete on the DeSales University cross country team this season.
Susko is a senior and Clawson a freshman.
