Oct. 5—CUMBERLAND — A Cumberland man was arrested Friday after he allegedly choked and assaulted a woman at a Holland Street residence, according to Cumberland Police.

Joseph Robert Benson III, 40, was charged with first- and second-degree assault and false imprisonment. He was later released from the Allegany County Detention Center after posting $15,000 bond.

Police said Benson struck the victim in the head with his fist to keep her from leaving the home. She was then pushed to the ground where he attempted to strangle her. She was able to free herself after biting Benson, police said.

It was unclear if the woman sought medical treatment.
